The arrested men, all from Nan province, are Police Lieutenant Colonel Thammanun Nakbua (reportedly the gang leader); Police Sub-Lieutenant Jittipong Sochai; Police Senior Sergeant Major Atthapon Kamsaen; Police Senior Sergeant Major Nonthawat Pansa; Wichan Laomee; Udomsak Saetern. The arresting police also confiscated the gang’s five firearms.

Police told the press that they had received a tip-off saying that a large amount of drugs would be moving through the area so they set up a checkpoint on the Angthong – Ayutthaya Road. When police saw what they thought was a suspicious car they followed the car to the River View Place Hotel. At the hotel the car was searched and over a million pills were found, police report. The arrested gang it is said picked up the drugs from Mae Fah Luang district in Chiang Rai. They say they were paid 800,000 ($25,000 USD) baht to transport the pills to the south.

According to Police Region 5 the Nan police have been fired and are presently awaiting trial.

Chalerm Yoobamrung, the deputy Prime Minister, has publicly stated that this is a big embarrassment for the Royal Thai Police. (yeah, you think?)
