Green tea billionaire Tan Passakornnatee is pouring 400 million baht ($12.9 million USD) into development of a community mall for artists together with a low-rise condominium and hotel in Chiang Mai.

Called Think Park, the project being built on a five-rai plot of Nimmanhemin Road is scheduled to open by year-end.

“The Think Park art community will be the destination of art lovers and the new hangout for people in Chiang Mai, similar to Palio Khao Yai in Nakhon Ratchasima,” Mr Tan said.

The community mall will comprise 70 shops selling art products and hand-made items, plus space for art exhibitions. In addition, the project will include 80 condominium units and hotel rooms.

Mr Tan’s daughter Varisa, who obtained a bachelor’s degree in theatre design, is in charge of the project under Tan Boon Co.

Before now, the plot was used as a leisure park and a place to display art because many artists in Chiang Mai lack space to exhibit their work.

The walking street concept is popular among retail developers as they strive to establish their projects as famous tourist destinations like Plearnwan in Hua Hin and Palio Khao Yai.

Similarly, Pena House Group recently announced plans to spend 500 million baht to develop a theme park in Cha-am, Phetchaburi. For Mr Tan, apart from expanding his drinks and restaurant business, property is the focus for the future. He owns plots in many areas of Bangkok, including near Arena 10 in Soi Thong Lor and on Sukhumvit Soi 22.

Before conceiving Think Park in Chiang Mai, he developed the Monkey Market in Lop Buri.
